On Saturday, the 10th of April, 2010, in the tragic aviation accident near Smoleńsk died the President of the Polish Republic together with his wife and many militaries of the highest rank, clerks, priests and Polish politicians who traveled on the airplane.
In the accident died in total 96 people. The airplane crashed while landing in Smoleńsk, on the territory of Russian Federation, where Polish delegation was supposed to commemorate other Polish tragedy that occurred 70 years ago when more than 22 thousand of Polish militaries and civilians were assassinated in Katyń.
In spite of the huge tragedy, the country structures are working correctly. The Polish law includes regulations and procedures that regulates activities of the country in such situation, although the situation is unprecedented in the global scale. The duties of the dead President are taken over by the Marshal of the Sejm, Mr. Bronisław Komorowski. A new presidential elections will be carried out in 72 days. The national mourning will last the whole current week.
