Situation in aviation sector in Poland

2009-05-18 12:43:21

The global crisis affects the Polish aviation sector. We can observe the process of consolidation, but the number of connections is constant.

The most competitive companies are low-cost airlines (Ryanair, Easyjet, Wizzair, Germanwings and others). The LOT Polish Airlines is going through bad times, mainly due to mismanagement and overemployment. It is evaluating the possibility of selling these national lines to Lufthansa group with a strong presence in the area.

The airports with the most potential are regional airports. Thanks to low-cost airlines the number of passangers has increased greatly in the airport of Wroclaw and Lodz. Pyrzowice Airport Katowice (Upper Silesia) is gaining importance due to the concentration of the industry that creates commercial traffic. It is estimated that every million passengers in Silesia creates 3 thousand jobs, not just at the airport, but also in cooperating companies and service providers.

An important role in the development of airports in Poland are European Funds and decentralization of the national company PPPL that managed the majority of the Polish airports.
